This policy explains how the Read My Document app for Android, iPhone, iPad, Mac and Windows handles your information: what stays on your device, what leaves it and when, what we store, and what we deliberately do not collect.
The app is one of several ways to use Read My Document. The Google Docs add-on, the Read My Page browser extension and Read My Notifications have their own policies.
1. What the app does
The app reads documents out loud: a PDF, Word or EPUB file, a web article, or text you paste or share with it from another app. You can listen with the voices that come with your device, which work offline and for free, or, if you have a Read My Document plan, with our cloud voices. Using the app does not require an account.
2. What stays on your device
- Your documents. Files are opened and turned into text on your device. The app keeps that text, the title and your reading position in its own storage so you can come back to it; it does not keep the original file, and it never uploads your documents.
- Web articles. When you share a link, your device downloads that page directly from the website it belongs to and extracts the text locally. The address is not sent to us.
- Your settings: the voice and speed you chose.
- Your session, if you sign in: kept in the operating system’s secure storage (Keychain on Apple devices, encrypted storage on Android and Windows) and removed when you sign out.
- Reading with a device voice happens entirely on your device: nothing about what you read leaves it.
On Android the app’s data is excluded from cloud backups and device-to-device transfers. While a document plays, its title is shown in your device’s media controls (lock screen, notification), as with any audio app.
3. What leaves your device, and when
- The text being read, only with a cloud voice. When you play a document with one of our cloud voices, the app sends the passage being read, the voice, the speed and the document’s language over HTTPS to our speech service (readmydoc-api.birdie.cl), which returns audio. It does not send the document’s title or file name. That text is held in memory only while the audio is produced and is then discarded; it is never stored, analysed, or used to train any model.
- The list of voices and, if you are signed in, your plan and remaining allowance, so the app can show which voices you can use.
- Sign-in, if you choose to: the app signs you in with Google, Microsoft or Apple. They tell us an account identifier, your email address and, for Google and Microsoft, your name. We never see your password.
- Crash reports and diagnostics: when the app fails, it sends a technical report — the error and where in the code it happened, recent technical steps, the app version, your device model and manufacturer, operating system and interface language. These reports carry no account identifier and no device identifier, and never the text of your documents. A technical error message can occasionally include the name or location of the file that caused it.
4. What we do not collect
- Your documents, their file names, or the addresses of the articles you read.
- Your location, contacts, photos, microphone, camera or clipboard. The app does not ask for those permissions.
- An advertising identifier. There are no ads and no advertising, analytics or tracking SDKs in the app, and we do not track you across apps or websites.
- Payment card details. The app sells nothing; plans are bought on our website, and card data never reaches us.
5. What we store on our servers
- Only if you sign in: the account identifier from your identity provider, your email address, your display name, your preferred language, your plan and its limits, and how many characters you have synthesised in the current period — a counter, not the text. The same account is used by Read My Document in Word, Outlook, Google Docs, on the web and in the browser extension.
- Service telemetry: for each audio request, which voice was used, how many characters, the language, how long it took and whether it failed, together with your account identifier when you are signed in. We use it to apply your plan’s limits and to keep the service working. It never contains the text you read.
6. Permissions
- Internet and network state — for cloud voices, sign-in, downloading an article you shared, and crash reports.
- Foreground service (media playback), wake lock and notifications (Android) / background audio (iPhone and iPad) — so reading continues when you lock the screen or switch apps, with play, pause and skip controls. Used only while you are listening.
- Files you choose — the app only sees the files you open with it or share with it.
7. Who else receives data, and what for
- Microsoft Corporation — hosting, database and telemetry (Azure).
- Speech providers — when you pick a cloud voice, the text being read is sent to Microsoft Azure AI Speech, Google Cloud, OpenAI or ElevenLabs, depending on the voice, for synthesis only. Some free cloud voices are synthesised on our own machine.
- Google, Microsoft and Apple — only if you sign in with them, to confirm who you are.
They act on our behalf and only for those purposes. We do not sell or rent your data, we do not use it for advertising or profiling, and we do not use the content you read to train models.
8. Retention and deleting your account
- Text sent for synthesis and the audio: not retained.
- Account, plan and usage counters: for as long as the account exists.
- Crash reports and telemetry: 90 days.
- Data on your device: until you delete the document, sign out, or uninstall the app.
You can delete your account from the app (Account › Delete account) or by email. How to delete your account, and what is deleted.
9. Security
Everything the app sends travels over HTTPS. Your session is kept in the operating system’s secure storage, and the app never handles your password.
10. Where your data is processed
Our servers run in the United States (Microsoft Azure, West US). Speech providers process text in their own regions. Birdie Ltda. is established in Chile.
11. Your rights
You may ask us for a copy of the data held about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete your account and everything attached to it. Write to support@birdie.cl and we will answer within 30 days.
12. Children
The app is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their data.
13. Changes
We may update this policy. When we do, we update the “Last updated” date above. Material changes to how we process your data will be announced in the app.
